So, what exactly are you working on Venkat?

I am working on Phantom Edge, a revolutionary solution that is redefining the way we look at energy consumption. Together, we have built a non-intrusive energy monitoring solution that leverages AioT and intelligence at edge to deliver asset-level energy consumption and performance status. This allows our clients to monitor their equipment’s power metric in real-time.

The system uses a sensor device that taps into the electrical supply and records power signatures from the various parts of the asset. An AI-driven analysis of these signatures draws insights into the energy consumption that allows us to optimise the performance of the asset.

The Why behind What:

Today, there is an urgent need to develop sustainable solutions which allow us to optimise our resources. Energy consumption often gets overlooked, and the only way to monitor it is the final reading on a meter. Through Phantom, we could not only make energy readings real-time and remotely-accessible, but also draw intelligent insight of consumption by independent parts of the unit. Such insight can help drive positive behavioral changes which can make a big difference in long-term sustainability goals.

What makes this project special?

Phantom is a very unique energy solution. Not only is it an independent venture for RBEI, it is the first IoT, non-automotive solution by the organisation to have passed Quality Gate 4 and be commercialized. There are many other energy monitoring systems available in the market, but Phantom is the only one that offers a non-intrusive solution towards energy optimisation.

Were there any challenges you faced while designing the product?

With a solution as innovative as this, the primary challenge remains designing sustainable algorithms and hardware. The codes need to efficiently report real-time updates of changes occurring in milliseconds. And, they need to be leak-proof.

In our trial stages, we’ve had to reverse calculate load monitoring to map out energy consumptions. Working with 2 electrical parameters, we developed a system that can sample individual data from the unit with the use of our algorithms. Moving forward, optimising these systems will remain a top priority.

What’s the way forward?

As I mentioned, the way forward is optimization. When we started, we were working with limited memory and resources, and the system took about 1 week to set-up. Through trial and error and change through customer feedback, we’ve been able to not only shrink our on-boarding time down to 30-70 minutes, but also automate the entire system through Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms. We are looking to automate it further and make it more dynamic so it can meet the requirements of our clients across the globe.

Who does it help?

We have catered to Industrial customers from quick-service chains, production units, banks and retail; as well as domestic clients such as apartment complexes. Our system has been utilised in BBMP elevators, retail stores and housing societies alike. Phantom is for anyone and everyone who wants to save energy and take a step forward towards sustainability.
